Hockey Helmets Have Room for Improvement Jason Mihalik, Assistant Professor of Sports Science at the University of North Carolina, specializes in studying hockey helmets. In 1874, the testicular cup became mandatory in hockey. It wasn't until 1974 that the helmet became mandatory. As Mihalik stated, "It only took 100 years to figure out that the head was just as important." He studied 18 helmets, and could not find one that fit properly. Seven could be removed without unfastening the strap. But on a positive note, the technology continues to improve.

Making an Impression

John Wayne left an imprint of his fist. Groucho Marx left an imprint of his cigar. Jimmy Durante left an imprint of his famous nose. The adventurous Hogwarts trio pressed their wands into the wet cement when they were honored. Grauman's Hollywood pagoda just might be the most famous movie theater in the world. Throughout the years, it has hosted numerous Hollywood premieres. It has appeared in dozens of movies ranging from "Singing in the Rain" to "Speed." Millions of visitors from around the world drop by each year to view the handprints, footprints, and other impressions left by their favorite stars.

It is often said that to "visit Hollywood and not the see Grauman's Chinese Theater is like visiting China and not seeing the Great Wall." Shall it be SCREEN-PRINT or Embroidery?

We are often asked: ”What is better for us, screen-print or embroidery on our bags?”
The short answer is SCREEN-PRINT, the cost is less and it lasts the lifetime of the bag.

Embroidery cost are based on “thread count” and that often becomes very costly when used for logos. Size is also a factor – screen-print can be adjusted to be in proportion to your bag. Often embroidery often appears smaller. The best use for embroidery on a bag is for a player name – but even in this instance should be compared to print costs to be sure you are getting the biggest bang for your buck! We are happy to provide you with cost estimates on both screen-print and embroidery when you prepare your custom bag order.

Girls Field Hockey - Rule Changes for Fall Season

High school field hockey players will be required to wear protective eyewear, effective with the 2011-12 season.

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Board of Directors, in its April 13 meeting in Indianapolis, voted to mandate the use of protective eyewear that meets the current American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard for field hockey.

NFHS field hockey rules previously allowed - but did not require - the wearing of eyewear that meets the current ASTM standard. Six NFHS-member state associations had previously passed more stringent rules and already mandate the use of protective eyewear.

Youth Ice Hockey Concussions

An excellent article regarding concussions in youth ice hockey was just published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. The article's key points are below:

The vast majority of concussions and hockey injuries in general at all levels of play are caused by legal body checking.
Concussion is a common, serious injury in youth ice hockey, affecting up to 25% of players per season by one estimate.
USA Hockey is considering a rule change to raise the age of permissible body checking to at least the ages of 13-14. Currently the minimal age group is ages 11-12.
USA Hockey Sub-committee on Body Checking believes skill development is retarded by body checking.
In contrast to this point of view, Hockey Canada believes body checking helps develop players.

The Canadian Academy of Sports and Exercise Medicine calls for body checking to be eliminated from all levels of minor hockey --- only beginning in elite Rep or All Star leagues in the 16-17 year age group.

Team Participation by Sport

Among traditional team sports, gymnastics led with a big participation increase of 23.5% to 4.8 million. Ice hockey continued to increase, up 7.9% in 2010 to 3.3 million. Basketball participation was up 10.1% to 26.9 million; tackle football up 4.8% to 9.3 million; and baseball up 8.9% to 12.5 million. That contrasts with 2009 decreases in basketball (5.0%), tackle football (6.2%), and baseball (13.5%).

In contrast, softball was down 8.4% in 2010 and 7.9% in 2009. Team sports that showed only slight decreases in 2010 were soccer, down 0.3%; volleyball, down 1.0%; and wrestling, down 0.9%. Lacrosse, surveyed for the first time, had 2.6 million participants.

For this survey, a participant is someone age seven or older who takes part in the sport or activity more than once in a calendar year.

The History of Soccer

Soccer is the world’s most famous sport and is mainly thought to be invented by British. The game in fact has been played in different styles throughout civilized history.

The early Japanese played a game similar to soccer and was also similar to the American style football back in 1000 BC. There is not too much information available about this game except that the ball was round and large being kicked between two teams playing in a small field.

A game was developed in China known as ˜cuju it had a ball that was filled with feathers and hair and was kicked between two teams required to get the ball through a small ring. Cuju was continuously played for nearly 2000 years and it died in 1600s.

The Chinese version of the game was famous in Korea and Japan. Many historians suggest that soccer during the renaissance period may have been influenced by Asian games. The Romans also played a type of football that was more exactly described as a cross between rugby and soccer but it had a lot of brutality.

In Europe, air filled bags were known probably before since 100 BC as they were a type of ball used in Roman game called ˜follis”. This was very much similar to modern rugby than soccer.

During the middle ages in Europe, a type of soccer was banned in England many times for being public annoyance and dangerous. It was closely linked to a Roman game called harpastum known as mob football.

Soccer hooliganism is globally dealt with in the modern game, it was also felt in England back in 1300s and 1600s. The game was banned many times because of the unruly behavior of players.

Some local Australian tribes used to play a game of football involving the leading player to kick a ball in to the air for other players to catch. Although this is not closely related with modern soccer but it can be seen that ball sports and games were invented by almost every society and they are not Chinese or Greco-Roman invention.

The history of modern soccer is definitely in England. The name soccer comes from the word association. The Cambridge rules were written in 1848 allowing some most famous schools of England to compete with each other under common rules. The Football Association partly used these rules in 1863.

As professional soccer developed with the formation of leagues, it provided a competitive playing environment which turned soccer into a sport viewed by spectators.

Major soccer leagues founded in Brazil, UK, Italy, Germany and other nations encouraged the culture of clubs and international teams around the world. It is so popular that the World Cup is watched live on TV by millions of people around the globe. Nowadays, national teams play soccer championships and over the last fifty years, FIFA World Cup has come to dominate as international soccer championship. FIFA World Cup games have achieved great number of crowds and also television viewing numbers were in billions over the duration of the competition.

The first FIFA Club World Cup was held in 2000 and this event is gaining fame and promoting soccer throughout the world. Corinthians of Brazil won the first FIFA Club World Cup.

Mr. Versatility

During his playing days, he was known as "Mr. Versatility." In 1967, for example, he played 70 games at third base, 64 games in center field, 36 games at second base, 10 games in left field, 9 games as the shortstop, and 5 more games as the right fielder.

All this moving around didn't seem to hurt his hitting much. He managed to finish in the top 10 in runs, hits, doubles, triples, stolen bases, on base percentage, times being hit by a pitch, and sacrifices that year.

On September 22, 1968, he took the mound for the Minnesota Twins and pitched a scoreless first inning, striking out Reggie Jackson in the process. He then went on to play a different position each successive inning. By the time the game was through, he had become the second player in Major League Baseball history to play every position in a game.

Cesar Tovar could do it all.

For a dozen years, he impressed his teammates with his defensive skills and frustrated opposing pitchers with a wide range of offensive tools. Barry Moore, Mike Cuellar, Dave McNally, Dick Bosman, and Jim "Catfish" Hunter all lost bids for no-hitters to the pesky bat of Tovar.

Mickey Lolich and Bill Freehan have a different memory of this dangerous opponent. On May 18, 1969, Lolich was pitching for the Detroit Tigers. Bill Freehan was catching. Rod Carew and Cesar Tovar were running them ragged. In the second inning of that game, Carew and Tovar combined for five stolen bases. Carew stole second, third, and home. Tovar swiped third and home ahead of the speedy Carew.

This not only set a record for the most steals by a club in one inning; it was also only the second time in Major League history that any club had stolen home twice in the same inning.

Tovar's middle name was Leonardo. In my humble opinion, it was an appropriate middle name. In many ways, Cesar Tovar was the daVinci of baseball.
